Simulated Annealing, High-Order Statistics and Mutual Information for Separation of Sources

    Get PDF
In this article, the fusion of a stochastic metaheuristic as Simulated Annealing (SA) with classical criteria for convergence of Blind Separation of Sources (BSS), is shown. Although the topic of BSS, by means of various techniques, including ICA, PCA, and neural networks, has been amply discussed in the literature, to date the possibility of using simulated annealing algorithms has not been seriously explored. From experimental results, this paper demonstrates the possible benefits offered by SA in combination with high order statistical and mutual information criteria for BSS, such as robustness against local minima and a high degree of flexibility in the energy function

A Canonical Genetic Algorithm for Blind Inversion of Linear Channels

Abstract. It is well known the relationship between source separation and blind deconvolution: If a filtered version of an unknown i.i.d. signal is observed, temporal independence between samples can be used to retrieve the original signal, in the same manner as spatial independence is used for source separation. In this paper we propose the use of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to blindly invert linear channels. The use of GA is justified in the case of small number of samples, where other gradient-like methods fails because of poor estimation of statistics

Identifying endophenotypes of autism: a multivariate approach

The existence of an endophenotype of autism spectrum condition (ASC) has been recently suggested by several commentators. It can be estimated by finding differences between controls and people with ASC that are also present when comparing controls and the unaffected siblings of ASC individuals. In this work, we used a multivariate methodology applied on magnetic resonance images to look for such differences. The proposed procedure consists of combining a searchlight approach and a support vector machine classifier to identify the differences between three groups of participants in pairwise comparisons: controls, people with ASC and their unaffected siblings. Then we compared those differences selecting spatially collocated as candidate endophenotypes of ASC.This work was partly supported by the University of Granada under the Genil PYR2012-10 project (CEI BioTIC GENIL CEB09-0010) and the University of Liège. Real Time QRS Detection Based on M-ary Likelihood Ratio Test on the DFT Coefficients

    Get PDF
This paper shows an adaptive statistical test for QRS detection of electrocardiography (ECG) signals. The method is based on a M-ary generalized likelihood ratio test (LRT) defined over a multiple observation window in the Fourier domain. The motivations for proposing another detection algorithm based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation are found in the high complexity of the signal model proposed in previous approaches which i) makes them computationally unfeasible or not intended for real time applications such as intensive care monitoring and (ii) in which the parameter selection conditions the overall performance. In this sense, we propose an alternative model based on the independent Gaussian properties of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) coefficients, which allows to define a simplified MAP probability function. In addition, the proposed approach defines an adaptive MAP statistical test in which a global hypothesis is defined on particular hypotheses of the multiple observation window. In this sense, the observation interval is modeled as a discontinuous transmission discrete-time stochastic process avoiding the inclusion of parameters that constraint the morphology of the QRS complexes. This work has received research funding from the Spanish government (www.micinn.es) under project TEC2012 34306 (DiagnoSIS, Diagnosis by means of Statistical Intelligent Systems, 70K€) and projects P09-TIC-4530 (300K€) and P11-TIC-7103 (156K€) from the Andalusian government (http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/organismos/economiainnovacioncienciayempleo.html)

Median-based clustering for underdetermined blind signal processing

    No full text
In underdetermined blind source separation, more sources are to be extracted from less observed mixtures without knowing both sources and mixing matrix. k-means-style clustering algorithms are commonly used to do this algorithmically given sufficiently sparse sources, but in any case other than deterministic sources, this lacks theoretical justification. After establishing that mean-based algorithms converge to wrong solutions in practice, we propose a median-based clustering scheme. Theoretical justification as well as algorithmic realizations (both online and batch) are given and illustrated by some examples

Hybrid ICA - ANN model applied to volatile time series forecasting

    No full text
In this paper we propose a new method for volatile time series forecasting using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) algorithms and Savitzky-Golay filtering as preprocessing tools. The preprocessed data will be introduce in a based radial basis functions (RBF) Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and the prediction result will be compared with the one we get without these preprocessing tools or the classical Principal Component Analysis (PCA) tool
